Just in case you were worried, Google says take a deep breath. On his Google+ page, Google’s John Mueller made it clear that Google won’t delist small business websites that are not mobile friendly:
“It’s great to get people motivated to make their website mobile-friendly, but we’re not going to be removing sites from search just because they’re not mobile-friendly. You can test your pages & reach our documentation (including some simple tweaks that might work for your CMS too) at https://g.co/mobilefriendly.”
The mobile ranking algorithm will only have an effect on the position of your website in Google’s mobile search results. Like we’ve been saying, your position in search results may be substantially deeper into the SERPs if your site is not mobile friendly. It will still be there, just harder to find.
Being mobile-friendly is not all that matters
A small business website that currently ranks low won’t suddenly get high rankings just because it is mobile-friendly. Google looks for a lot of things, Google is looking for informative content that is relevant to what your business does; it will soon be paying attention to whether that content is factual; it is looking for fresh content, and more. Now, if you combine good web content writing with a good SEO program, AND make sure your website is mobile-friendly, you’ll be ahead of the game.
